Denmark remains popular among Dutch farmers!

Space

First of all, space! When you enter Denmark, you immediately notice the peaceful rolling landscapes. Denmark is slightly bigger than the Netherlands; however, Denmark has significantly fewer inhabitants: only 5.9 million! There are also many similarities with the Netherlands; culturally, socially, and economically. The weather is not very different either — both countries have a maritime climate. Spring does start a little later in Denmark than in the Netherlands, but it is also more explosive. Denmark generally has more hours of sunshine and an always noticeable westerly wind. Each year, there is about 765 mm of precipitation.

Favorable land prices and a strong agricultural sector

Denmark is attractive to farmers because of its relatively low land prices, good financing options and favorable interest rates. Worldwide, Danish dairy farming is highly regarded for its cost-efficiency. Denmark also offers good opportunities for arable farmers. Cereals and maize are the main crops, but potato cultivation is also possible (starch and seed potatoes). Grass seed cultivation gives good balances, which also applies to other seed crops such as spinach and clover.

The above-mentioned characteristics make Denmark an attractive location for farmers who want to expand or facilitate business succession. Denmark also offers plenty of opportunities for starters. Webinar: Farming in Denmark

At the end of 2021, our supervisor, Danitsja Rientjes, extensively discussed Denmark's agricultural characteristics and financial possibilities. Dairy farmer Greuter and the arable farming Bolt brothers shared their experiences as agricultural entrepreneurs in Denmark. The Greuter family emigrated from Middelie in North Holland to Denmark in July '21. Jordi and Korné Bolt moved from Groningen to Billund (South Jutland) in 2019.
